Walmer Castle, located a short walk from Deal seafront, is a fascinating mix of Tudor fortress and elegant country residence.

Built on the orders of King Henry VIII as part of his coastal defences, the castle later evolved into the official residence of the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports - an honorary position held by some of Britain’s most notable figures, from the Duke of Wellington to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

Today, Walmer Castle and Gardens is one of Kent’s leading visitor attractions, known for its award-winning gardens, rich history, and family-friendly experiences managed by English Heritage.

The History of Walmer Castle

Constructed in the 16th century as part of Henry VIII’s coastal fortifications, Walmer Castle was designed alongside Deal and Sandown Castles to protect England’s vulnerable south-east shoreline. While Deal Castle remained a purely military fortification, Walmer Castle gradually transformed into a comfortable residence for the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.

The role of Lord Warden was both ceremonial and strategic, and the castle has hosted many distinguished holders of the title, including:

  • Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington - Lord Warden for 23 years until his death at the castle in 1852. Visitors can see his chair, in which he died, and the famous Wellington boots that bear his name.

  • Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother - Lord Warden from 1978 to 2002, remembered for her affection for Walmer and her dedication to the gardens.
