History of Sevenoaks
The origins of Sevenoaks date back over 1,000 years, with the town's name believed to have come from seven oak trees that once stood on the site of Knole Park. Mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1087, Sevenoaks grew around the historic Knole House, a grand estate that has been home to the Sackville family since the late 15th century.
Knole House, one of the largest homes in England, remains a focal point of the town's history. Built between 1456 and 1486, it boasts over 365 rooms, representing the days of the year, and is now managed by the National Trust. Knole’s deer park and woodland are some of the most visited areas in Sevenoaks, attracting nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
Throughout its history, Sevenoaks has maintained its market town roots. In 1200, it was granted a market charter, and today, the town's High Street continues to thrive with independent shops, pubs, and restaurants.
