Deal Castle is one of Kent's most fascinating coastal fortresses and a must-see attraction on any visit to the seaside town of Deal.

Built on the orders of King Henry VIII, this circular artillery fort formed part of an elaborate chain of defences built to protect England's southern coastline. Today, Deal Castle remains one of the best-preserved Tudor castles in England, allowing visitors to experience life inside a 16th-century stronghold.

The History of Deal Castle

Deal Castle was constructed in the late 1530s after Henry VIII's split from the Catholic Church. Fearing invasion from France and Spain, the King commissioned a series of coastal artillery forts to defend the English Channel. Completed in 1540, Deal Castle became the most elaborate of them, with a distinctive rose-shaped layout designed to withstand cannon fire and provide 360-degree defence.

Over the centuries, Deal Castle continued to serve as a garrison, including during the English Civil War and both World Wars. Managed today by English Heritage, the castle stands as one of the most impressive examples of Tudor military engineering in the country.
