The walk begins at Dover Priory railway station and ends at Deal railway station, making it ideal for those travelling by train.

Route Highlights

White Cliffs Visitor Centre

Shortly after leaving Dover, you’ll reach the White Cliffs Visitor Centre, which offers maps, information, public toilets, and a café. It’s a great spot to pause before starting the main coastal stretch.

Dover Castle

From the seafront, walkers are treated to dramatic views of Dover Castle, perched high above the town. This medieval fortress has been guarding the English coast for over 900 years.

Coastal Path & Dover Patrol Monument

Heading east along the cliffs, the route offers panoramic views across the Channel (France is often visible on clear days). You’ll pass the Dover Patrol Monument, commemorating those who served during the First World War.

Walmer Castle

Route Overview

This short circular trail links Walmer and Kingsdown, taking in coastal views, wildflower meadows, and a stretch of the historic Saxon Shore Way.

The walk begins at the car park just off Kingsdown Road by the beach. From here, the route heads towards Walmer Castle, a 16th-century artillery fort built by Henry VIII and surrounded by award-winning gardens (check opening times if you’d like to visit).

The trail continues through Hawkshill Freedown, once used as a Second World War aerodrome. Today it is open grassland, rich in wildflowers, with a memorial to the pilots who flew from here.

You’ll then head towards Kingsdown village, joining the Saxon Shore Way, a 257 km long-distance coastal path running from Gravesend to Hastings. Following this scenic trail back along the coast, you’ll enjoy excellent views of Walmer Castle before returning to the car park.

Route Overview

For a longer challenge, the walk from Deal to Folkestone takes you through some of the most spectacular sections of the Kent Downs National Landscape (AONB).

Starting at Deal railway station, the route leads to the seafront before heading south past Deal Pier and on to Kingsdown. From here, the coastal path continues towards St Margaret’s Bay, a popular stop for views of the White Cliffs.

Next, the trail passes through Dover, where you can explore Dover Castle, the wartime tunnels, and other historic sites. From Dover, the route climbs back onto the cliff path, eventually descending into Folkestone.

This point-to-point route is ideal for walkers who want to experience dramatic chalk cliffs, historic landmarks, and sweeping sea views. Trains run regularly between Folkestone and Deal, making it easy to return to your starting point.
